Some no-heat calls end with a switch that was off. Walk these four in a minute. If one of them fixes it, you pay nothing and nobody comes out. If none of them do, you will know exactly what to tell us.
Is it actually asking for heat?
Set it to HEAT — not OFF, not COOL — and push the target five degrees above the room. Give it a full sixty seconds. If the screen is blank on a digital one, that's the batteries.
The two switches that look like light switches
One sits at the top of the basement stairs, usually on a red plate. The other is on the burner itself. Either one shuts the whole thing down. Both up. Then check the breaker panel for one marked furnace, boiler, or burner.
Is there anything in it?
The gauge is on top of the tank — a glass or plastic dome with a red float inside. If the float has sunk out of sight, you're at E. A burner with no oil in front of it is not a broken burner.
One press. Never two.
It's the red button on the burner, usually on the control box. Press it once and wait.
PRESS IT ONCE, AND ONLY ONCE. Every press pumps more oil into a chamber that isn't burning it — that turns a service call into a cleanup. If it doesn't fire the first time, leave it alone and call us.
